After a 4-0 defeat against France last week, Netherlands hoped to bounce back with a heavy win over minnows Gibraltar.

Netherlands did win the game, but their Euro 2024 goal difference remains in the negative column.

The Dutch laboured to a 3-0 home win, with defender Nathan Ake scoring two of the goals.

Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst played all 90 minutes and had a frustrating night.

Wout Weghorst’s frustrating night in front of goal

Wout Weghorst is attempting to prove he deserves to be a starter for the Netherlands. He was on the bench against France in their previous match, although was brought on in the first half in a tactical switch.

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman wanted Weghorst to seize his moment against minnows Gibraltar.

Unfortunately, Weghorst did not have a great night, with Gibraltar managing to frustrate him.

Memphis Depay and Nathan Ake (2) scored the goals, and Weghorst will reflect he probably should have bagged at least a hat-trick.

Weghorst attempted eight shots. Four of them tested the goalkeeper, Dayle Coleing who plays for Northern Irish side Glentoran.

The Manchester United loanee saw another shot blocked, and missed the target with his three other attempts.

Weghorst did create three chances, and was a threat throughout – but his clinical touch has deserted him.

FotMob report he had an Expected Goal tally of 2.05 from the quality of chances which came his way, ending the night without getting on the scoresheet.

This was part of a staggeringly one-sided game with Netherlands attempting 51 shots, scoring only three times.

It was a missed opportunity for Weghorst to prove a point at international level, and also to return to Manchester United with added confidence.

The on loan forward has scored only two goals for Manchester United, none in the Premier League.

He returns to Old Trafford with more minutes on the clock, and no goals in his two international games.

United will need him to start being more clinical in the weeks ahead. If not, a soon to be fit again Anthony Martial will take his place.
