Michael Carrick is eagerly anticipating his first-ever encounter against Leeds United as Manchester United’s head coach.

Manchester United will clash with Daniel Farke’s side on Monday night in the Premier League.

It will be United’s first match since the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on 20 March, when Harry Maguire picked up a red card, which resulted in a one-match suspension.

United are looking for three points to remain in third place, while Leeds are sitting just above the relegation zone with seven games left to play.

Michael Carrick previews Man Utd vs Leeds

Carrick spent 12 years playing for United before becoming a coach, but the 44-year-old only played against Leeds on one occasion during that time.

United’s interim head coach is still aware of how much the rivalry means to fans, and he is expecting a proper atmosphere at Old Trafford on Monday night as a result.

In his programme notes, Carrick previewed the match between United and Leeds, referring to the one meeting he had against the Yorkshire outfit in a red shirt.

“The rivalry between these clubs is well known and, even though I only played in this fixture once, I know it guarantees a proper atmosphere,” Carrick wrote, as cited by Samuel Luckhurst.

“A spring evening, at a packed Old Trafford, with the crowd right behind the team – this is the kind of game anyone would love to play in.”

United need to win as many of their last seven games as possible to ensure they are playing in the Champions League next season.

What is Michael Carrick’s record against Leeds as a Man Utd player?

Although Carrick played against Leeds six times throughout his playing career, he only did so once during his 12 years at United.

Five of those meetings came when he played for West Ham.

Carrick was on the winning side in his only game against Leeds as a United player.

The former midfielder played 90 minutes in a 3-0 victory, as Michael Owen scored a brace and Ryan Giggs extended the lead to three goals.

Carrick will be hoping for a similar result on Monday night.
