Why Manchester United’s Champions League clash vs Galatasaray may be called off tonight

Manchester United face Galatasaray in the Champions League in what is a must-win game for the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag‘s side have endured a miserable European campaign thus far. They’ve only won one game, which means they sit rock bottom in their group.

The Red Devils have terrifying memories of Istanbul. Back in 1993, they faced Galatasaray in a game remembered as ‘Welcome to Hell‘, which will go down as one of the most intimidating atmospheres in the club’s history.

Tonight’s encounter will definitely not be as fierce… that’s if it does in fact go ahead.

Why Manchester United vs Galatasaray may be postponed

The Champions League clash is at risk of postponement. The terrible torrential rain in Istanbul has led to an absolutely soaked pitch.

ESPN Manchester United Journalist Rob Dawson took to X to state the following:

‘Current state of the pitch at Rams Park. Doesn’t look good at all. It’s been raining heavily in Istanbul all day and it doesn’t look like stopping. Lots of officials out having a look.’

‘UEFA saying, as things stand, the game is going ahead. But there are big patches of standing water in front of the benches and the officials who have been out rolling a ball on the surface didn’t seem too impressed.’

The under-19s played through the horrendous conditions earlier today, in what was described as ‘unplayable‘ by the end.

With the rain set to continue – it isn’t out of the question that this one could be called off.

When would Manchester United vs Galatasaray be replayed?

Given the fact Manchester United are already in Turkey – best guesses would suggest tomorrow night, once the weather has cleared and the pitch has been seen too.

However, this also would have a knock-on effect for United, given the fact they play Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday night.

The player’s safety should be the first priority – but it is also vitally important the game does go ahead to prevent even more fixture congestion. Stay tuned for more updates.
