Kobbie Mainoo may well have to be careful following the resumption of Manchester United’s season after the international break.

Despite Manchester United playing just seven Premier League games so far this season, Erik ten Hag’s position as Red Devils manager seems to be up in the air.

The team has not performed as well as they are capable of and last weekend’s 0-0 draw for United against Villa was a rather meaningless result.

Kobbie Mainoo could well have an injury problem for United and he has withdrawn from England’s Nations League games during the international break but that may not be the only reason for concern for Mainoo.

Mainoo suffered a hamstring problem against Spurs but was still fit enough to play against FC Porto and indeed Aston Villa but the United academy graduate could now be out for a few weeks.

Mainoo is just one yellow card away from being suspended for United with the English teenager currently on four bookings in just seven games.

There is no doubt that Mainoo will benefit from the international break but the start to the campaign for the midfielder has not been as good as he would have hoped.

United return from the international break on the 19th of October where they will take on Brentford at Old Trafford with their boss Thomas Frank heavily linked with the potential managerial role at the club.

As for Mainoo, injury troubles and now a potential suspension loom large whenever he next does receive a yellow card in the Premier League.

How does the Premier League yellow card suspension system work?

With Mainoo just one yellow card away from a suspension for the Red Devils, the English midfielder is one of several players who could be suspended if they receive another booking.

The Premier League’s rules are that a player will be suspended if they receive five yellow cards before match week 19 in England’s top division.

If there are 10 yellow cards accumulated by the same player before matchweek 32 then that player will receive a two-match suspension.

20 yellow cards in a season can result in the Regulatory Commission punishing the player in a manner that they deem to be most fitting.

Joao Palhinha received 14 yellow cards in a single season back in the 2022/23 campaign but Mainoo certainly has some way to go before breaking that record in England’s top division.
