Why Gonzalo Montiel cannot play for Sevilla v Manchester United in Europa League second leg

Both Manchester United and Sevilla will be missing a World Cup winner from their teams this week.

There were four World Cup winners on the pitch at Old Trafford on Thursday night. Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane for Manchester United, and Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna for Sevilla.

In this week’s Europa League quarter-final second leg only one will remain, Marcos Acuna.

Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are ruled out by injury. The former is definitively out for the season.

Gonzalo Montiel suspended

Gonzalo Montiel played all 90 minutes for Sevilla in their draw at Old Trafford. The right-back was one of the two players who helped Lisandro Martinez off the pitch when he suffered injury.

Amid the 2-2 draw in the first leg, Montiel picked up a yellow card, and will miss the second leg through suspension.

Montiel played in four games for Argentina in the World Cup including the final.

Losing him will be an obvious setback for Sevilla. Montiel has played 31 games for the La Liga side this season.

Sevilla can call on 37-year-old Jesus Navas to feature at right-back. He played the second 45 minutes at Old Trafford, replacing Oliver Torres in a tactical switch.

They of course still have one World Cup winner left standing, the fiery Marco Acuna, who enjoyed his battle with Antony at Old Trafford.
