What the Danish media are saying about Rasmus Hojlund’s goal and performance v San Marino

It’s only San Marino. We should lead with this to put everything about Denmark’s latest international win into context.

But it wasn’t an easy game for Denmark either, who laboured to a narrow 2-1 win, surviving a scare after the minnows equalised to make it 1-1 in the second half.

It was Yussuf Poulsen who scored the winner, yet Rasmus Hojlund‘s spectacular strike was the one everybody was talking about.

Hojlund scored in the first half, lashing in a left footed strike into the top corner from a tight angle.

Rasmus Hojlund scores again

The Manchester United striker took his Euro 2024 tally to seven goals, with his stunning effort. It was a very important goal, playing a part in ensuring Denmark avoided a major embarrassment.

Bold.dk described Hojlund’s rocket, writing: “Denmark showed class, with Christian Eriksen and Mohamed Daramy working together beautifully. The latter then played Rasmus Hojlund free in the box, who smashed the ball safely into the roof of the net.”

The outlet gave out harsh scores in their player ratings out of 10, with Hojlund graded the highest with 5/10, while Christian Eriksen was scored only 3/10.

They wrote: “Hojlund delivered an excellent goal to make it 1-0 and generally had fire in his eyes, which was otherwise in short supply for the Danes. However, the 20-year-old striker seemed a bit overheated at times.”

Tipsbladet was more critical, pointing out that Hojlund needs to channel his enthusiasm a little better and not get too easily frustrated, on an anxious night for his national side. They graded him a three out of six on their performance scale.

The report read: “It was a goal, and of course it was nice to have such a goal, which evokes memories of Preben Elkjær’s one against the Soviet Union. But he also misuses his energy very often, where the San Marino team could tease him.”

Denmark almost secure for Euro 2024

The victory ensures Denmark are very close to securing a spot at Euro 2024. Only a disaster and mathematical improbability will deny them a spot.

Rasmus Hojlund will likely be gracing the tournament, while Erling Haaland sits at home, with Scandinavian rivals Norway failing to qualify.

It will be a chance for him to shine on the big stage, and if his Champions League performances are anything to go by, he will embrace it. He has shown for Denmark that he is a natural at international level.
