Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s commitment to giving young players a chance at Manchester United looks set to continue.
After giving Angel Gomes an appearance in just his second game in charge, Solskjaer has called up two more players from the under-23s.
Midfielder DJ Buffonge and defender Ro-Shaun Williams were both pictured in training yesterday along with Gomes.
Ro-Shaun Williams has a unique chance to impress because he is a centre-back. It’s an area where United clearly need to strengthen.
Williams is 20 and needs to make the most of his chance if he is soon given an opportunity to make his debut.
He is a player who has been tipped for the top, by academy chief Nicky Butt.
Back in 2015, Butt tipped Williams and teammate Axel Tuanzebe to become stars, glowing over the traits he saw them demonstrate.
He said: “The lads at the back were brilliant. The way we performed meant we played a lot of the time one vs one as well.
“It’s a really good thing and something you’ve got to do if you play for Manchester United at the top level – defend one vs one.
“I thought they did that and I was really confident with them doing that. They proved to me they’re more than capable of playing at a high level.”
There is still chance Williams and Tuanzebe can form a first team partnership. It seems fanciful at this stage, but both of them are making steady progress now.
Williams is getting his chance, while Tuanzebe is performing strongly on loan at Aston Villa and will get his chance in pre-season.
Solskjaer is keen on having a look at Williams, and its long overdue that a United manager gave him the chance.
