Jim Thwaites was called up into the Manchester United first-team on Saturday for the clash with Chelsea.
24 hours after playing 120 minutes for Manchester United’s U18 side against Crystal Palace in the FA Youth Cup, Jim Thwaites was on the bench at Stamford Bridge.
United walked out 1-0 winners against Chelsea, with Thwaites getting the experience of travelling with and being around the senior team, soaking in the atmosphere, which he seemed to really enjoy.
There was likely no chance he would have played against Chelsea, considering the workload he had played in the FA Youth Cup semi-final. But Michael Carrick’s decision proved why he is perfect for United.

There's no way United will blow a top five place!

Michael Carrick’s comments on Jim Thwaites getting senior call-up
Thwaites was a surprising inclusion on the United bench against Chelsea due to his U18 commitments and the fact that another defender would have been more useful to Carrick given the crisis.
Speaking to TNT Sports before the victory against Chelsea, Carrick was asked about Thwaites, admitting the club didn’t tell the 18-year-old before his FA Youth Cup semi-final.
“We held it back from him. It was always the plan to come down, and it’s the experience as much as anything.”
Carrick has had a close eye on Thwaites, including him in the squad that travelled to Kildare earlier this month.
Additionally, Thwaites has run the show in numerous games this season, which were played with Carrick in the stands watching. Thwaites looks likely to step up next season, and these chances are only going to benefit him.

Thwaites’ inclusion for Manchester United proves Carrick’s credentials
Carrick may have only taken Thwaites for experience, but this alone shows the United interim boss is the perfect man to take charge permanently.
Thwaites is being prepared for a breakthrough next season by Carrick, which shows that the interim is planning for a full-time basis, aiming for long-term success and picking the academy talents he sees as being part of this.
The 18-year-old’s inclusion in the first-team squad for experience is also a massive positive compared with how Ruben Amorim used to fill an empty gap on his bench.
Amorim was criticised multiple times for including two goalkeepers on his bench instead of elevating academy prospects, and this, in a nutshell, showcased his unsuitability for the role.
Carrick hasn’t fallen into this trap, and as a result, it is another notch in the win column for him and his chances of stepping up and becoming the permanent United manager.
