What is Erik ten Hag's record against current Premier League managers?

Manchester United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to make Erik ten Hag their new manager ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The Athletic claim that some details still need to be finalised and that nothing will be announced formally until after Ajax’s Dutch Cup final against PSV on April 17.

Not that it is necessarily the be all and end all, but ten Hag has never managed in the Premier League.

So here, we take a look at ten Hag’s record against current Premier League managers as he manages in the English top flight tier for the first time…

Frank Lampard

Lampard of course won his first encounter with United as Everton manager on Saturday, with that 1-0 defeat perhaps so bad that the board felt that they needed to push ahead with appointing the new manager to change the mood around the club.

Ten Hag and Lampard faced off twice during the Englishman’s time in charge of Chelsea, in the Champions League group stage during the 2019/20 season.

In October 2019, Chelsea beat the Dutch outfit 1-0 on their own patch after a 90th minute winner from Michy Batshuayi.

A month later, ten Hag’s Ajax side raced into a 4-1 lead at Stamford Bridge, with the fourth goal scored by none other than Donny van de Beek.

Then, two harsh dismissals for Daley Blind and Joel Veltman, within a minute of each other, allowed the Blues to come back into the game and make it 4-4 by the end.

With a different referee, ten Hag was on course to mastermind a thumping win at a ground United have traditionally struggled at.

Jurgen Klopp

The following season, Ajax were drawn against Liverpool in the Champions League group stage.

In October and December 2020, behind closed doors, Ajax were beaten 1-0 at home and away by the Reds.

It was a Nicolas Taglifico own goal which decided the game in Amsterdam, which is a whole lot better than United’s last home result with Liverpool.

The Anfield defeat cost Ajax dearly as they dropped into the Europa League later that month, just as United did under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after defeat to RB Leipzig.

Record vs Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino is of course not a Premier League manager but ten Hag’s record against him is worth examining as they were the two front-runners for the United job.

The only time they faced each other was in the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.

In the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, ten Hag’s men produced a dominant display and should have won by more than the 1-0 scoreline they took back to the Netherlands.

In Amsterdam, Ajax were in command, leading the tie 3-0 with 35 minutes of action remaining.

Then, Lucas Moura took over on a staggering night which left ten Hag and his players stunned.

That season was probably the last time it could be argued that Pochettino was at his peak. He was never quite the same after the final defeat to Liverpool and has scratched around for some consistency and contentment ever since.

Meanwhile, ten Hag has regenerated his Ajax side and will arrive at Old Trafford as a manager on the rise.

The Dutchman has never played another Premier League club or manager, but Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola had never managed in England before they came here and that has worked out well for their respective clubs.
