What happened when Mason Mount held talks over England future after dismal two years at Manchester United

Mason Mount revealed the warning Thomas Tuchel gave him after taking charge of the England team.

It’s a big season for everyone connected to Manchester United as they try to bounce back from a disappointing 2024/25 season.

The last season was another injury-plagued campaign for Mason Mount as he failed to have much of an impact on United’s midfield.

Ruben Amorim has always made it clear that he is a fan of Mount, knowing his qualities and what he can offer at his best. The England international has been unable to produce that regularly and will hope to change that this season, despite the fact that United have signed two new players in his preferred position.

The appointment of Thomas Tuchel as England manager was good news for players like Mount, who had played under the German coach during his time at Chelsea, winning the Champions League.

Mason Mount given no guarantees

After becoming England manager, Tuchel held Zoom calls with Mount and other players to greet as many as he could and to explain their current circumstances with the national team.

Mount has not played for England since losing to France in the quarter-final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Since then, Mount has been out of the picture in the England set-up.

Tuchel was a big fan of Mount during his time at Stamford Bridge, but he has made it clear to the player that there will be no guarantees in terms of caps.

Mount told BBC Sport: “Thomas called me up.

“He called me and said that he’s calling a lot of players and just wanted to catch up.

“I don’t know how many players he probably called, 40 or 50 maybe.

“But it was good to see his face, good to catch up with him, good to speak to him.

“He looked in loads of energy, like I remember, and was bang up for the new role.

“I could see he was very excited and it was obviously good to catch up with him and speak to him and see what he was preparing.”

Mount has been restricted to 15 Premier League starts in his first two seasons at Old Trafford.

There’s no point worrying about a place in the England team if Mount is unable to get into the United line-up. That’s where his priorities should lie right now.

When will Mount be in action again?

Mount is likely to get his next run out in a midweek friendly against Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old came off the bench against West Ham at the weekend and played around 20 minutes, but didn’t get to have an impact on the game.

It remains to be seen if Mount will be in contention to start games when the season starts. He won’t be getting ahead of himself in his attempt to prove full fitness and sharpness following two forgettable campaigns.
