Wes Brown advises Ruben Amorim to give Wayne Rooney a role following Plymouth sacking

Wayne Rooney will be eager to return to football following his sacking at Plymouth Argyle.

Manchester United’s all-time record scorer is out of work after leaving the Pilgrims bottom of the Championship.

Plymouth parted ways with Wayne Rooney on New Year’s Eve after a nine-game winless run.

Rooney spent just seven months in charge, having taken the job in May, but he wasn’t able to meet expectations.

Plymouth had signed off on a documentary following their season with Rooney. However, The Guardian claims these plans have been scrapped following his departure. We can safely assume they didn’t record his dismissal meeting.

Wes Brown wants Wayne Rooney back at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim has been urged by Wes Brown to invite Rooney onto his backroom staff.

It has been a difficult first two months for Amorim after the Portuguese coach succeeded Erik ten Hag as United head coach. United are 14th in the Premier League and face Liverpool on Sunday.

United have suffered four consecutive defeats going into the game against an in-form Liverpool side. They conceded 11 goals on that run and failed to score in their last three matches.

With problems at both ends of the pitch, Brown believes Rooney could help out as a striker coach.

“If Wayne wanted to spend time as a striking coach he would be absolutely brilliant at it,” Brown told The Sports Daily.

“He was one of the best goalscorers we’ve ever seen and was a top playmaker as well. If he wanted to do that he would be very good on movement and things like that, he was one of the best to do it.”

Rooney fails to prove himself again

After questionable spells at Derby County and DC United, Rooney has failed to prove himself as a top coach who warrants a job in the Premier League.

It would be different if Rooney came to United as a striking coach.

Rooney could see that as a step down from first-team management at the lower levels but there is nothing to suggest that Amorim will be sending an invite anytime soon.

Amorim already decided that Ruud van Nistelrooy wasn’t the right fit so it doesn’t look like he will look to rely on any club legends.
