‘We were better than them’… Man Utd star unhappy with Brighton defeat

Manchester United are reeling from a first defeat this Premier League season, beaten 2-1 at Brighton.

A 2-0 win away at Brighton at the end of last season was a rarity, with Manchester United’s struggles against the Seagulls continuing.

United had bounced back from a goal down and had appeared to take the lead before Alejandro Garnacho’s ‘winner’ was very harshly ruled out.

To add insult to injury, United lost concentration in injury time and conceded a late winner, scored by Joao Pedro.

Andre Onana verdict

Goalkeeper Andre Onana was among the Manchester United players to speak out after the disappointing result.

Onana believes United were hard done by to leave with zero points, insisting the Red Devils were the better team.

He told club media: “We came here to win, unfortunately we didn’t win.

“We had a great game, I think we were better than them, we had more chances, we had more possession, we had more control of the game.

“Unfortunately, they disallowed us a goal, but that’s part of football, that’s part of life, we have to move on.”

Manchester United had done well to get back into the game and while the loss paints a miserable picture, there were positives to take from the performance.

United edged Brighton in terms of possession with 52 per cent, and had 11 shots to Brighton’s 14. It was an even game, with one late defensive mistake at the back gifting it to the home side.

Onana wants United to show focus and respond well, adding: “Of course, we’re going to talk with each other, we’re going to sit and analyse the videos and what went wrong, and from there, we will move.

“Big games are coming, big clubs, so the expectation is here, it will be very high.”

Echoes of Arsenal last season

The defeat had some echoes of the loss away at Arsenal early on last season for Manchester United’s side.

Alejandro Garnacho saw a goal very harshly disallowed by VAR, and from there, United lost concentration and turned a potential win into a defeat.

The same happened here, and what’s worrying, is that after that loss, United did not respond well, losing the next game at home to Brighton.

United are at home next against Liverpool, and have to shake this loss off quickly and hit back with a victory. Anything less, and this will have turned into a very poor start to the season.
