Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has spoken about his reaction to Bruno Fernandes being awarded the United captaincy after being entrusted by Erik ten Hag to be the club’s new leader.

Harry Maguire was stripped of his captaincy last week as the future of the England defender seems uncertain.

Ten Hag decided that Fernandes, who joined the club from Sporting Lisbon back in 2020, was suitable for the club captaincy.

The reaction from social media was certainly positive for the Portuguese midfielder, who has arguably been one of the best signings that United have made maybe since Robin Van Persie joined the club from Arsenal back in 2012.

It seems that not only are the fans happy with Fernandes being captain, but so are the players.

‘We viewed him as the captain’

Shaw has spoken to Sky Sports about his reaction to the news and it doesn’t seem to be a surprise to the Englishman or his teammates.

“Last season we looked at him as the captain anyway, alongside [Maguire],” Shaw said after United’s pre-season tour of the United States. “He’s still the same and I’m sure he will keep the same attitude the way he approaches things. He did a very good job last season.”

Fernandes has scored 64 goals and 54 assists in 185 games since he joined the club from Sporting and it seemed he was the obvious choice for the club captain.

Fernandes has shown leadership traits throughout

Ever since his January move to United, not only has his quality brought adulation from the United fanbase but his passion and his ability to irritate the opposition players have also endeared himself to the Old Trafford support.

The midfielder signed a new contract with United last summer and looks set to spend his prime years at Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder will be hoping that this season will be the season that the Red Devils can win their first major trophy in a decade.
