Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney made the surprise decision to leave D.C United after just over a year as manager of the American side.

Wayne Rooney had previously managed Derby County, as well as being linked with Everton, Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer has seemingly decided his next career move.

Rooney had done an excellent job in difficult circumstances with Derby but decided to leave during the summer of 2022 and move to America.

Well, Rooney has revealed his plans for the future after leaving America and may well be waiting for a job in the EFL Championship.

Rooney’s plans

In a statement from the American club that the Englishman would be moving on, Rooney has revealed that a return to England is seemingly the logical next step.

Rooney said: “It’s just the right time. I think I’ve done everything I can to try and get the club into (the) play-offs.

“It’s not one single thing that has happened, it’s about timing in your career. I have really enjoyed my time here. But I just feel it’s the right time to go back to England. What lies ahead, I don’t know.”

It seems that a move to England lines up nicely with a job in the EFL Championship potentially becoming available further down the line.

Birmingham City interest

According to The Telegraph, Birmingham, who recently have acquired new owners with Tom Brady involved, are potentially interested in the Englishman.

Whether Rooney will want to take a break from football management before returning to yet another EFL role remains to be seen but you wonder if a Premier League side would potentially come calling sooner rather than later.

StrettyNews claimed in April of 2022 that Erik ten Hag was keen to add Rooney as his assistant but the former United striker rejected the proposal from the Dutchman, so Rooney seemingly wants another top job.
