What Wayne Rooney learned about Bruno Fernandes at Man Utd training
There has been some debate about Fernandes as club captain in recent years.
No matter what Fernandes does, some pundits – most notably Roy Keane – can’t help but find faults with the Portugal international.
However, after a recent visit to Carrington, former United captain Wayne Rooney shared some insight into what Fernandes was like during the training session.
Rooney is convinced that he’s a leader and ‘very good captain’, saying that he needs more players around him to lead United to Premier League success.
“I know around the training around, he’s doing things which a captain should do and trying to help and inspire people, so whatever’s being said, and we’ve all seen it, I think he’s a leader,” Rooney told talkSPORT.
“He’s a very good captain for Manchester United and with a few more players around him, hopefully he can go and lead us to the Premier League.”

Bruno Fernandes named in Opta’s Premier League team of the season
Fernandes was selected in Opta’s Premier League team of the season, which is based on data collected throughout the 2025/26 campaign.
The United skipper was joined by David Raya, Matheus Nunes, Gabriel, William Saliba, Adrien Truffert, Dominik Szoboszlai, Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson, Rayan Cherki, and Erling Haaland.
On Fernandes, Opta explained of his inclusion via BBC Sport: “Without doubt the easiest inclusion for this season’s best team, Bruno Fernandes broke the Premier League record for assists in a season with 21, overtaking Thierry Henry in 2002-03 and De Bruyne in 2019-20 (both 20) as the most creative player in a season in the history of the competition.
“The underlying numbers behind it were even more extraordinary.”
