Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Talksport are the latest to back up last week’s claims that a deal will be finalised this week.
As we noted earlier this month, while Wan-Bissaka will be a major upgrade at right-back, it will still leave United with a need to fix the right wing position.
Young talent Tahith Chong could be in line to benefit, with no move for a new winger imminent.
Chong made his breakthrough at the end of last season and looked lively, but manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held him back far more than was anticipated.
His reason for doing so was likely a common reason for managers’ distrust of young attacking players; concerns over their defensive duties.
With right-back a weak position last season, putting a young inexperienced winger on that side was an obvious reason to hold back.
Now with a top class right-back incoming at United, Solskjaer should have confidence to throw Chong in.
Clearly we would like to see United splash out on an exciting big money winger this summer, but there are enough problems in central midfield and central defence which still need prioritising. A striker too if Romelu Lukaku leaves.
If no winger arrives, then Wan-Bissaka’s arrival means Chong could get more chances to flourish. The conditions for him to do will be improved thanks to the England under-21 youngster’s defensive qualities.
Let’s hope he can really seize his chances in pre-season.
