Victor Lindelof made his first Premier League start of the season at the weekend to make his 200th appearance for the club.
The Sweden international performed well as United beat Everton 2-1, slotting seamlessly into the defence alongside Lisandro Martinez.
This was just what United needed, with both Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire out injured.
Lindelof does not make a fuss, nor a distraction behind the scenes if he is not in the starting line-up, and this is exactly what Erik ten Hag requires from a defender who is now essentially a squad player.
Lindelof is perfect squad player
Lindelof spoke to United’s club website to outline his ultra professional approach.
He explained: “I am always ready. Whenever the coach and the team needs me I am always there and of course I know what I can do out on the pitch.
“I just want what is best for the team and as I said I am always there and always ready whenever the team needs me to come and perform.”
This is the no-fuss approach Manchester United require, at a club where the smallest drama becomes headline news.
Lindelof is far too good to be just a fourth choice defender, but while he’s in this position, he is simply going to get his head down, and wait for his opportunity.
United will look to Lindelof to play a key role in late December in January, as Sweden will not be at the World Cup, unlike his Red Devils defensive teammates.
Lindelof may drop out of the side next weekend with Raphael Varane fit again, but he will be ready if called upon, and it won’t become a major story if he drops out of the side.
This is quite different with Harry Maguire, who is an England international and the club captain, who may even be dropping down to fourth choice with Lindelof impressing.
Each time Maguire is left out, it’s a big story, and that’s not his fault, but it is a distraction Erik ten Hag may decide he is eventually better of without.
