Victor Lindelof bids farewell with proud Man Utd record, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire lead tributes

It will be a summer of change at Manchester United, with many first-team players set to leave the club.

After a turbulent campaign for Manchester United, finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final, Ineos are embarking on an important summer for the football club.

Ruben Amorim has been the head coach for six months after replacing Erik ten Hag, and it is clear that the former Sporting CP boss does not have the right profile of players to play his preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

United need to be clever in the market because they haven’t got the funds to waste money ahead of such an important season for Amorim, who will be looking to make significant improvements.

That also means getting rid of players surplus to requirements and United fans hope the club follows through with those plans, because it’s been a long season of sub-standard performances.

As of now, three players are certain to leave Old Trafford this summer but more will follow in due course.

Victor Lindelof sends farewell message ahead of Manchester United departure

On the final day of the Premier League season, United confirmed three exits due to expiring contracts. That meant that Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Christian Eriksen will all leave Old Trafford next month.

Lindelof, 30, missed a lot of football in his final season at United due to injuries and made just 25 appearances.

The Swedish centre-back arrived from Benfica in 2017 when Jose Mourinho was looking to strengthen United’s defence. Since then, Lindelof has played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick, Ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Amorim.

His position in United’s defensive pecking order dropped over time as new defenders joined the club. The addition of Ayden Heaven in January perhaps gives United peace of mind that they’re covered in that position already.

Lindelof has posted a message on social media to thank United for the past eight years, which saw him win two trophies, including the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

The Swede wrote: “There’s nothing on earth like being a Red. Manchester, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Several of Lindelof’s former United teammates were quick to respond, such as David de Gea, replying with a love heart emoji.

However, the tributes were led by two players who know what it’s like to wear the captain’s armband for United.

Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire shared similar messages to Lindelof.

Fernandes wrote: “Will miss you [ice emoji] man [love heart emoji]”

Meanwhile, Maguire replied: “Will miss you mate [love heart emoji]”

It’s bound to be an emotional time for any player leaving United this season, especially after missing out on adding a Europa League to their list of honours.

Lindelof holds Swedish record at Man Utd

After spending eight years at United, Lindelof has made more appearances for the Red Devils than any other Swede.

Lindelof made 284 appearances for the club, while Anthony Elanga is next in line with 55 appearances.

Other Swedes to represent United include Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson, Jesper Blomqvist and Bojan Djordkic.

Having more appearances for United than any other Swede is certainly a record Lindelof can be proud of.
