Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown believes that Raphael Varane would be a ‘dream’ central defensive target for the club during the summer, as per the Evening Standard.
They report that Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly remains on top of Ed Woodward’s shopping list and is ‘eager’ to come to Old Trafford but Brown feels the World Cup winner would be even better.
Woodward was reportedly willing to part with £100m to land Varane in the summer and will enter the market again this summer to get a partner for Victor Lindelof.

And while Koulibaly is having an impressive season out in Serie A, Varane has been doing it at the top level for years now, winning everything there is to win.
He was on the winning side in both the Champions League and World Cup finals in 2018 and that is a level of pedigree Koulibaly simply cannot match.

Manchester United need to get this next central defensive purchase right and while the signs are good for Koulibaly, Varane’s consistency over a number of years would make him the optimum target.
But Koulibaly looks to be achievable – and that goes a long way after a summer window spent chasing unobtainable targets – and remains an exceptional option provided he keeps this form up and can replicate it in the English top flight.
