Van Gaal praises Frenkie de Jong and says he is worth 112 million

Manchester United are hoping to Barcelona will accept the club’s first offer for Frenkie de Jong.

Marca report United have submitted an offer in installments worth a total £68 million, which Barcelona are ‘seriously considering’.

While this was going on, De Jong was playing for the Netherlands against Wales. Having been rested in the first half, he came off the bench with the game goalless in the second half.

De Jong helped Netherlands win 2-1, winning the ball back for their winner, and lifted his side’s performance as he took hold of the midfield.

‘Worth 112 million’

Netherlands manager and former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal always has a way with words, and he had his say on De Jong’s display after the match.

Van Gaal was quoted by Voetball International: “Frenkie de Jong does bring an extra quality, of course. That is why he is also worth 112 million.”

This was not a figure plucked out of the air at random. Van Gaal was referencing a CIES Football Observatory report, which claims De Jong’s true transfer value is £112.5 million Euros.

Manchester United have to hope Barcelona were not reading or listening to Van Gaal’s comments.

De Jong’s performance was praised by pundit Rafael van der Vaart who told FCUpdate: “This is Frenkie de Jong. Frenkie is a different level.”

The same outlet gave De Jong a 7/10 for his showing, the joint highest among the Dutch players.

The report added: “With Frenkie de Jong inside the lines, the Dutch team started to play better again. It is no coincidence that the FC Barcelona midfielder was responsible for the winning goal in stoppage time.”

Van Gaal was not asked for comment on the De Jong to Manchester United rumours, which is probably just as well.

Marca report Erik ten Hag is trying to tempt De Jong to United by promising he will have a key role and that he will build the team around him.
