Upamecano would offer Manchester United a younger Koulibaly alternative

Young RB Leipzig central defender Dayot Upamecano may be allowed to leave the German club during the summer provided a big-money bid comes in, according to Bild.
That is of relevance to Manchester United because it is no secret that the club’s defence has been below-par at times this season.
As a consequence, the Evening Standard report that a new centre-half is the main priority during the forthcoming summer transfer window, with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly top of the list.

But another man United reportedly have in their sights – as per I News – is Paul Mitchell, the current Leipzig Head of Recruitment, as they look for their first ever director of football.
It of course remains to be seen if Mitchell will come to Old Trafford, but if he did, it would likely boost the chances of Upamecano following him to the northwest.

Upamecano could end up costing a similarly astronomical transfer fee as Koulibaly but at just 20, he is significantly younger and could end up proving greater value for money if he develops.
It would also give United greater reassurance about their investment if they had Mitchell’s expertise to inform their choice, but Upamecano would feel a slightly more natural signing as much of the club’s historical success has been based on taking players who are about to burst onto the scene and taking them to the next level.
