In one of the most surreal transfer rumours of recent times, Manchester United have been linked to Chelsea’s David Luiz.

Luiz was sold by Jose Mourinho in his second spell at Chelsea but returned to the club last year. His form and style of playing was crucial to Antonio Conte’s title win this season but he has not been in favour this season.

Consequently, Luiz has apparently issued Conte with an ultimatum, and may be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge in January. This has, according to the Express, put Mourinho on red alert.

There is no doubt that Luiz, as a footballing defender, would be a significant upgrade on what Mourinho currently has available to him at Old Trafford and would be a fantastic replacement for the injured Eric Bailly.

However, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also interested in the Brazilian, and should their interest materialise with a concrete offer, Chelsea will be desperate to ensure the player goes abroad rather than Old Trafford.
