Manchester United transfer target Cody Gakpo scored the game-turning goal for Netherlands in their World Cup opener against Senegal.
Gakpo did so with an impressive header, leaping in front of Edouard Mendy to put his side in front, with the Dutch going on to win 2-0.
This was remarkably Gakpo’s 33rd goal contribution of the season for club and country, and the nature of his goal led to comparisons in his homeland to Robin van Persie.
Van Persie famously scored a spectacular header for the Netherlands against Spain at World Cup 2014.
The Mail has reported Manchester United remain interested in Gakpo ahead of the transfer window, having considered a move in the summer.

Gakpo honoured to be compared to Robin van Persie
Gakpo spoke to Voetbal International after Netherlands’ win and played down comparison to the former Manchester United striker.
He said: “Van Persie is a legendary player in the Netherlands. And actually in the whole world.’
“It’s an honor for me to be compared to him. At the end of the day, I’m a different player. I also have to prove myself and do my best this tournament.”
One pundit discussion on VI claimed Gakpo was a combination of Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder and Robin van Persie rolled into one player.
Manchester United did not move for Gakpo in the summer as too much money was spent on signing Antony, leaving little left over.
But this could in turn be expensive, if Gakpo continues his impressive form, especially at the World Cup, his price tag could soar.
ESPN has also claimed Liverpool are interested in the Dutchman. United hold an advantage, with Gakpo telling The Times he spoke with Erik ten Hag back in the summer.
