Manchester United will make a £22m offer for Arsenal schemer Mesut Ozil, according to Don Balon.
The Spanish media outlet report that Jose Mourinho, who is an admirer of the German playmaker, will not wait for the summer for Ozil’s contract to expire and will instead make a cash offer in January, to test Arsene Wenger’s resolve rather than lose the star player for nothing.
United were linked with a move for Ozil back in 2010 – you may recall that failure to sign the then-Werder Bremen star, who went to Real Madrid instead, was the transfer story which allegedly prompted Wayne Rooney’s first transfer request. Mourinho worked with Ozil in Spain and recently wrote the foreword for Ozil’s book; with the player’s contract up at the end of the season, he has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.
With neither Henrikh Mkhitaryan or Juan Mata showing the sort of form the manager had been hoping for, a January move is on the cards as Mourinho attempts to boost this season’s title hopes.
Wenger’s stance on absolutely not selling Ozil has softened in recent weeks but whether or not he will be willing to negotiate with his long-time rival Jose Mourinho remains to be seen.
