With Cristiano Ronaldo enduring an ineffective return to Madrid, Ralf Rangnick didn’t have Edinson Cavani available to either replace or help the great Portuguese.
The Uruguayan was ruled out of the first leg at the Wanda Metropolitano as he continues to struggle with a groin injury.
The recently turned 35-year-old has missed the last four matches since coming off against Burnley to be replaced by Ronaldo.
Cavani’s constant unavailability has been frustrating this season and with Mason Greenwood not being considered for selection, Rangnick has next to no options beyond Ronaldo.

Playing against three Atletico centre-backs, United’s number seven cut an isolated and frustrated figure for the majority of proceedings.
Not feeling like he was being protected by the referee, Ronaldo struggled to impose himself on the game and found himself dropping deep just to get some touches of the ball.
But that left United with no focal point at the top of the pitch and allowed Diego Simeone’s side to put the squeeze on us.
If Cavani was fit to feature, Rangnick could have considered unleashing Ronaldo and Cavani together.

Following last night’s success in nullifying the Red Devils up until the influential Anthony Elanga brought us level, Simeone could well adopt the same formation at Old Trafford.
With the return leg at the Theatre of Dreams due to take place in just under three weeks time, United desperately need Cavani to overcome his injury woes.
Even if it means being introduced as a substitute, Cavani’s pressing, movement and willingness to relish a physical battle will unnerve the reigning La Liga champions.

United number 21’s sheer presence will also create space for Ronaldo to exploit.
It would be a surprise to see Cavani available for Saturday’s home clash against Watford, but with big games against Manchester City and Tottenham to follow before the second leg, Rangnick has to carefully manage El Matador’s workload.
Cavani burst into life this time last year with a run of goals in the Europa League. It would be very timely for him to do the same in the Champions League this season.
