Manchester United’s defeat at the weekend opened the doors for the sniping at the club in the media.
United fans had to endure it before Ronaldo signed, and he quickly proved his naysayers wrong.
Now the criticism turns to Ronaldo’s impact, simply because Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty.
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton launched into a spiel of criticism on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.
Sutton said: “Bruno was super happy last season; he was the main man. All of a sudden, Ronaldo’s stolen his thunder. He’s not going to like that.
“He’s not the main man anymore. He’s not going to be the same player at Manchester United.“I don’t care what anybody else says, until Ronaldo leaves. Because he was the big star, he was the person who kicked United on.
“Who wants a bigger hitter coming in, stealing the thunder? Nobody does, that’s human nature.”
Bruno wanted Ronaldo at Old Trafford
Criticism like this is totally skewed and misinformed. Fernandes was desperate for Ronaldo to join him at Old Trafford.
When Solskjaer dropped the bombshell that United were interested in Ronaldo back in late August, he revealed Fernandes had been part of that transfer process.
Solskjaer was quoted by The MEN: “We have always had good communication, Bruno has been talking to him. He knows how we feel about him.”
When the deal was announced, Fernandes wrote on social media, ‘Agent Bruno’, hinting at his role in the move.
Back in June, Fernandes told United’s website: “Growing up, everyone knows Cristiano was my favourite player.
“It was the way he worked every day, the mentality he had, the capacity he had to give 100 per cent in every game at a high level, for me it was like a motivation, like you always have to do better.”
There is no better way for Fernandes to try and become better each and every week by measuring himself up against Ronaldo and training alongside him each day.
The pundits can try and destabilise United all they like, and will continue to. And that will make it so much sweeter when the team win, Ronaldo and Fernandes gel, and shove their made up narratives right back at them.
