Tyrell Malacia has been pictured working hard in the gym ahead of his return to Manchester United following the Netherlands World Cup exit.

The 23-year-old didn’t play a single minute of the Oranje’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals.

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal preferred ex-Red Devil Daley Blind over Erik ten Hag’s first summer signing from Feyenoord.

With Malacia yet to make his World Cup bow, United’s number 12 should be returning to Carrington feeling fresh and likely champing at the bit to get some game time.

With Luke Shaw playing all but 25 minutes of England’s five World Cup matches, Ten Hag may opt to deploy Malacia over the former Southampton youngster in United’s first couple of games back in domestic action.

Malacia started over Shaw in United’s Carabao Cup third-round win against Aston Villa and it’s highly likely that the Dutchman will be included in Ten Hag’s starting XI for the fourth-round clash against Burnley in eight days time.

The six-time Netherlands international started United’s last match prior to the World Cup break against Fulham at right-back due to Diogo Dalot being suspended.

With Dalot limping off against Morocco with a suspected muscle injury, Malacia could well be needed at right-back again although fellow full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams featured in United’s mid-World Cup friendlies against La Liga sides Cadiz and Real Betis.

Malacia has shared footage of him working hard with a personal trainer on his Instagram story.

Having been brought into United’s starting line-up in place of Shaw following the 4-0 demolition at Brentford, Malacia started five Premier League games in a row.

But Malacia was hauled off at half-time during the 6-3 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad.

Shaw has been in control of the left-back berth ever since, but after failing to get game time in Qatar, Malacia looks ready to hit the ground running upon his return to Carrington.
