Tyrell Malacia was delighted to make his first start for Manchester United in the 3-1 win against Crystal Palace.

The former Feyenoord man, who was Erik ten Hag’s first signing as manager of Manchester United, had come on at half-time in the first two matches of pre-season against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory.

But the Netherlands international started against Patrick Vieira’s Eagles at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

United’s number 12 played the most minutes of any outfield Reds player against the Selhurst Park side before being replaced by Ethan Laird in the 77th minute.

It was an energetic performance from the 22-year-old and he showcased his attacking credentials and blistering pace against the Londoners.

Playing against former Derby County man Malcolm Ebiowei, the five-time Netherlands international had to be at it defensively and it was an enthralling battle between the youngsters.

Malacia was heavily involved in United’s opener with his pinpoint right-foot pass finding Diogo Dalot who then crossed for Anthony Martial – who buried home the opportunity.

With United now heading for Perth for the next leg of our pre-season tour, Malacia will get another opportunity to pit his wits against Premier League opposition when the Reds face Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa on Saturday.

United then head to Oslo, Norway, to face Atletico Madrid before hosting fellow La Liga side Rayo Vallecano the following day, in what will be Ten Hag’s first match in charge at Old Trafford.

After making his first start for the Reds, Malacia posted on Twitter following United’s 3-1 win against Palace.

With 19 days until United’s Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion, Malacia will be hoping to oust Luke Shaw in the race to be Ten Hag’s first-choice left-back against the Seagulls.
