Twente star says Rangnick protege teammate is so good he could stay at Old Trafford, makes Haaland comparison

Manchester United were held to a draw by FC Twente with goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall making a number of key saves to claim a point.

It has become a theme for opposition goalkeepers to have world class performances against Manchester United.

And while that is obviously due to their quality, Manchester United must also accept their own deficiencies in terms of taking chances.

Lars Unnerstall was the latest goalkeeper to deny United, making three outstanding saves to restrict United to just the one goal on the night, enough for FC Twente to claim a 1-1 draw.

Twente star praises Unnerstall

Twente striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel told the Dutch media after the game that he was just hoping goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall would not be sticking around at Manchester United permanently.

He was quoted via Twente Fans: “I hope we get him on the plane and that he doesn’t stay here.

“We can always fall back on a great Unnerstall. Especially in these kinds of matches you really need him and that is no shame.”

Unnerstall’s final save came in stoppage time when Manchester United were pushing for a late winner.

A header from Harry Maguire was deflected and looked to be heading into the bottom corner, before Unnerstall intervened.

Van Wolfswinkel went as far as to compare Unnerstall’s regular brilliance to prolific striker Erling Haaland.

He added: “Some of the balls he catches, that is of course unprecedented. We have been saying it for three years. It is getting a bit boring, it is just like Erling Haaland who scores a hat trick every time. Unnerstall shows every time how good he is.

“It is also really enjoyable for us. There are only a few goalkeepers who catch such balls every time.”

Who is Lars Unnerstall, and the Ralf Rangnick connection

Unless Manchester United are looking for a new back-up to replace Altay Bayindir or Tom Heaton, its unlikely Unnerstall would be considered for a move to the club.

This is because Unnerstall is at the tail end of his career, now 34-years-old.

It was back in 2011 that Unnerstall made his professional debut in the German Cup for Schalke, just 21 at the time.

The manager who handed Unnerstall his debut was none other than former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The German stopper went on to play for Fortuna Dusseldorf, VVV Venlo, and PSV Eindhoven, before signing with Twente in 2021.

He has gone onto play more than 100 appearances for Twente, with his display away at Manchester United being the best yet.
