Matheus Cunha started on the bench in North London but he was brought on as a late substitute by Carrick, and the Brazilian playmaker scored the winning goal with a curling effort from outside the box.

Cunha was outstanding during his short cameo and his shot was probably his best moment in a United shirt since he signed for £62.5 million in the summer.

What Alex Stepney spotted before Matheus Cunha goal

Patrick Dorgu and Cunha both scored sensational long-range strikes to help United to a 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Both goals will enter the history books for this iconic rivalry, but United legend Alex Stepney, who won the 1968 European Cup with the Red Devils, was quick to point out some unseen moments in the build-up to Cunha’s winner.

Stepney wanted to acknowledge the hard work of Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko in the build-up to the goal, with both of Cunha’s teammates helping to make space for his effort.

This was Cunha’s fifth Premier League goal of the season, and easily his best so far in a United shirt.

Since Carrick took charge, Cunha has had to accept a place on the bench. But against City and Arsenal, he came on and immediately had a positive impact.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle, Cunha had a wholesome reaction to his winning goal.

“100 per cent [greatest moment in the shirt]. These kind of games are the games we dreamed of playing.

“When I come to United, these are the games we watched on television. This is one of the best moments for me here.

“I know the quality of the group, everyone wants to play. The important thing is to help the team and to give everything.”
