Three winners and four losers from Man Utd v Tottenham, including one player who did not feature

Manchester United were defeated 4-3 away at Tottenham in a crazy game where both teams deserved to lose.

Two terrible goalkeeping performances from both teams led to a goal-fest, with some suspect defending too. United went 3-0 down, before making it 3-2, with Tottenham eventually winning 4-3.

Ruben Amorim took a gamble by rotating his team, and it backfired. Yet at the same time, he has also learned a lot about his squad.

We broke down the winners and losers from the contest, who saw their United careers trend up… or down.

Losers

Lets get the bad news out of the way and address the losers first…

Altay Bayindir: Manchester United back-up Altay Bayindir was given a rare chance, and his first game under Ruben Amorim. Will he ever get a second?

Bayindir looked hesitant in goal and set the tone for a shaky performance at the back. He was criticised by Gary Neville for parrying Pedro Porto’s early shot into a central area for Tottenham’s opener.

The fourth goal he conceded was a real mess, nudged off the ball, showing a lack of strength.

Victor Lindelof: Victor Lindelof has quietly endured a Mason Mount year from hell with injuries. It just has not had the attention because his back-up role and expectation he will leave.

Lindelof was making his first start under Amorim, and did not even complete the first half, heading straight down the tunnel following an injury.

Lisandro Martinez: With a stand-in goalkeeper, Manchester United needed the defence to be tight, and experienced centre-back Martinez to step up. Instead he was part of the problem.

Martinez’s half-hearted clearance at the start of the second half left Spurs with a tap-in, while he was unable to prevent the third. This was not a good night for the Argentine.

Antony: Antony was given the chance he had been waiting for, a start in attack in a big game. Up against a makeshift Tottenham defence, he was anonymous.

Antony was lucky not to be subbed at half-time. When the Brazilian was taken off, United improved. He looked lost in the attacking role in Ruben Amorim’s system, and he would be lucky to get another chance.

Winners

Believe it or not, there were some winners from Manchester United’s defeat.

Amad: Manchester United would have won the game if Amad was named as a starter. As pointed out after the City game, defenders are backing off the talented wonderkid.

When he came on he changed the game, scoring one goal and providing an assist. United are worrying reliant on him at the moment, and we hope Amorim’s decision to rest him pays off with a match-winning performance against Bournemouth this weekend.

Joshua Zirkzee: Manchester United’s comeback was sparked by Joshua Zirkzee, who was sharp enough to score the first goal.

Any time the Dutchman scores is a good day for him, he has four in total this season, three of which have come under Ruben Amorim. His hold-up play gave United a foothold, and he has given himself a fighting chance of starting this weekend.

Andre Onana: Without stepping onto the pitch, Andre Onana’s standing as first choice goalkeeper became even more secure.

Altay Bayindir’s unimpressive display underlined that he is no threat to Onana’s spot. Yes, Onana made an error at home to Forest recently – but he has been solid this season in general and there is no goalkeeper controversy at Old Trafford.
