Three reasons Casemiro deal is better than a move for Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid, The Athletic report.

The £59.7 million move shows Manchester United have finally moved on from a lengthy pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.

Casemiro is expected to seal his move to United in the coming days, becoming the club’s fourth summer signing.

The deal for Casemiro is arguably better than signing Frenkie de Jong in any case. Here is a look at three reasons why…

Better suited to the Premier League

The major concern with Frenkie de Jong was that he is too lightweight for the Premier League. There are no such worries with Casemiro.

Casemiro does not shirk the physical side of the game. He has built up a reputation as a destroyer, a combative player who is happy to sit in front of the defence and let his fellow midfielders play.

De Jong prefers to roam forward, leaving gaps in behind, while Casemiro has more defensive discipline to his game.

This is exactly what Manchester United have lacked for too long. He is an elite player in his position and will help United toughen up, providing structure and an improved mentality to the team.

He’s a winner

Frenkie de Jong’s spell in Barcelona has not been a success. Since his £65 million from Ajax three years ago, he has failed to win over supporters at the club, and has won only one Copa del Rey.

Casemiro’s medals are overflowing. He has won five Champions League titles and three La Liga titles, and this winners’ mentality will help the team.

De Jong would have joined United as a player with a point to prove. Casemiro will be just as motivated, but without the pressure. Whatever happens, he will be a legend at Real Madrid.

Manchester United need leaders right now, and Casemiro will have a major impact. De Jong could have been an expensive risk.

He wants to join

It took Casemiro just a matter of days to decide he wants to join Manchester United. Frenkie de Jong has had the option all summer long.

If a deal for De Jong did go through, it would have felt like the Dutchman would have joined begrudgingly. He had made crystal clear that his desire was to stay at Barcelona.

United have bought players who didn’t particularly want to join before, and it always ended badly.

Casemiro has very quickly decided he wants to sign for Manchester United, and this is key. United need players with the right mentality.
