It appears that three current players are in the run in for Manchester United’s number seven shirt. But who will be wearing it next season?

The famous jersey has been left vacant following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this season, meaning it may have a new players name accompanying it heading into the 2023/24 season.

In United’s history, the shirt has found its way to some truly iconic names. David Beckham, Eric Cantona and George Best come to mind.

However as of late, the number has been associated with a bit of a curse. It hasn’t really worked out for any United number seven since the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson. With this, lets take a look at who’s in the running for the number seven shirt at Old Trafford.

Who will be the new Manchester United number 7?

It’s worth bearing in mind that if United make summer transfers this could all be subject to change. Any one of Jude Bellingham, Victor Osimhen or Harry Kane would make sublime number sevens.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, here are the three players are currently in the running for the number seven shirt.

Alejandro Garnacho

After securing a lucrative new deal with the Red Devils, Alejandro Garnacho looks to be with the club for some time – meaning that he could certainly be a potential candidate for the new jersey.

He idolises Ronaldo and has all the attributes needed to be a phenomenal number seven. We think he’s the number one candidate at the moment.

Antony

Antony also is a good shout. He’s young, hungry and has a lot still to prove. Gifting him the number seven shirt could give him new found confidence that propels his game to the next level.

Jadon Sancho

Finally, it’s arguably the most dubious out of the three – Jadon Sancho.

What looked destined to be a transfer made in heaven, Sancho has struggled massively since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund. A number seven jersey appointment could rejuvenate Sancho and mould him into the player that he looked certain to become at Old Trafford.
