Three Manchester United players who should be dropped for the derby

Manchester United prepare to face off against Manchester City in the first Manchester derby of the new season.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United have won three games on the spin for the first time this season but to make it four in a row against last season’s treble winners will be no easy feat.

After the manner in which United won the Champions League game against Copenhagen, there may well be some tough decisions that need to be made by Ten Hag.

Here are three players who may well need to be dropped for the game on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford

Perhaps the most high-profile name on this list is Marcus Rashford. The English forward, who scored 30 goals last season, has simply not been good enough.

With just one goal to his name this season, the United academy graduate has struggled for consistency and fluffed another big chance against the Danish side on Tuesday.

Alejandro Garnacho, who also fluffed a big chance against Copenhagen, deserves a chance and what better way to take his chance than by making a big impact in the Manchester derby.

Scott McTominay

This one may be a little less surprising but Scott McTominay has not been good for the Red Devils despite his recent goalscoring exploits.

With just 8 passes to his name against Sheffield United, the midfielder is just not that, a midfielder. He excels in the opposition box and not in his own as he has given away penalties in back-to-back games.

The midfield dynamic would be improved massively if Mason Mount or Hannibal Mejbri came into the team and added that much-needed bite and energy.

Sergio Reguilon

The Spanish defender has only just come back from a hamstring injury that he suffered against Burnley in September and it may well be a risk to start him against high-flying City winger Jeremy Doku if he is not 100 per cent.

Victor Lindelof, when he came off the bench against Copenhagen, looked much more assured defensively than the former Sevilla left-back.

Not playing an attacking left-back may well harm the team cohesion going forward but that may well be necessary due to the attacking talent that City possesses. A defensive approach has worked in the past with Aaron Wan-Bissaka previously excelling.
