Thomas Muller praises Cristiano Ronaldo following his Tottenham hat-trick

A goalscoring masterclass by Cristiano Ronaldo kept Manchester United’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League alive.

Just three days after his great rival Lionel Messi crashed out of the Champions League in Madrid, Ronaldo stepped up when United needed him the most and added further weight to him being labelled the GOAT.

His hat-trick at Old Trafford last night downed Antonio Conte’s Tottenham and ensures United have built priceless momentum heading into Tuesday night’s crucial second leg against Atletico Madrid.

The 37-year-old’s trio of strikes against the north London side meant that he is now FIFA’s leading all-time goalscorer with a staggering 807 goals.

United needed a lift after surrendering against Manchester City last weekend and after a brief visit in Portugal, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner proved his fitness ahead of the crunch clash.

United’s number seven had already scored a wondergoal against Spurs this season with his stunner from a tight angle to open the scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in October.

Last night’s treble took Ronaldo’s Premier League tally for the season to 12 goals, only Mohamed Salah has scored more (20).

The great Portuguese has 18 goals to his name in all competitions this season and his attentions would have no doubt already turned to guiding the Reds through to the Champions League quarter-finals with another classic night, under the lights at Old Trafford.

The hat-trick against Tottenham was Ronaldo’s 59th career treble. But it was just his second for Manchester United. His first came against Newcastle 14 years ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s longevity is unrivalled and his eye-catching performance against Spurs caught the attention of Bayern Munich and German legend Thomas Muller, who replied to Ronaldo’s Instagram post.
