Ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Anfield, a shocking revelation has sprung to mind and it doesn’t bode well for Sunday.

Anfield is the stadium everyone currently around Manchester United will have been dreading when the fixture list first came out during the summer.

It is the scene of back to back thrashings in successive seasons with a 4-0 in 2022 and then last season the horrific day which ended with a 7-0 defeat for Erik ten Hag.

Due to this, rightly many aren’t too excited about this years trip, especially considering how bad the Red Devils have been in recent years. With countless injuries also affecting United, Paul Merson’s prediction summed up the general feeling around the club.

But United’s recent history at Anfield is worse than even this suggests. United haven’t won at Anfield since January 2016 which is almost eight years, and haven’t scored there since December 2018, almost five years to the day.

The last time Manchester United scored at Anfield

It really is quite embarrassing to be heading into a huge rivalry game, but with the knowledge they haven’t scored in the fixture for five years.

December 16th 2018 was the last Anfield goal scored by United and this was via a player who currently is without a club according to The Athletic.

Jesse Lingard was goalscorer and he currently remains club-less six months after he was released by Nottingham Forest.

Lingard had been training with Al-Ettifaq under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and also trained with West Ham, but neither decided to sign him.

History could repeat itself this Sunday for United

The last time we scored at Anfield was in the loss which ended Jose Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford.

With all the pressure on Ten Hag right now, a loss like United have suffered in recent years could see the pressure on him really increase.

While it’s unlikely the club part with Ten Hag at least while Sir Jim Ratcliffe hasn’t officially arrived, but it would make it four losses in five for United – a run which will be difficult to come back from.
