‘That’s what you need’… Ian Wright tells Ineos exactly what Man Utd should do this summer

This summer, Manchester United under new leadership are expected to begin a rebuild to restore the club to the top level.

Manchester United have entered a new era with Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe running the show, this summer is their first chance to establish their authority.

The hope this summer for many is that the defensive department at Old Trafford will be overhauled this summer, with some young talents needed to complete the club’s spine.

This would join Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund as the three players already making up that spine.

Now pundit Ian Wright has told Ineos and Sir Jim exactly where they’ll need to strengthen this summer.

Ian Wright tells Manchester United where to strengthen this summer

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show on Premier League Productions on Monday, Wright claimed United were two players away from an excellent spine.

“I think when you look at Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho and Hojlund, what you wanna see now from the recruitment is from the defensive side, you wanna get that spine sorted with two really good young centre-halves that have got at least 10 years quality.

“I’m not saying to go get someone like [Jarrad] Branthwaite from Everton, but I’m saying that’s what you need, that calibre of player coming through at United so you get that spine sorted so you can get – if it’s going to be Ten Hag – the kind of players that are going to fit into what that team will be structured like.

“There’s a lot of work to be done and it’s going to come down to recruitment as well, they’re going to have to recruit so much better than they have been.”

Which two defenders should Ineos sign this summer for Man Utd?

This summer United really do need two new centre-halves as opposed to one as this season has been awful in terms of injuries.

Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are all either not good enough, past their best or both.

This leaves Lisandro Martinez as the one who is guaranteed to be here next season and so two new starter-level defenders are needed.

On the right side, there is no better option than Antonio Silva while the left could be Goncalo Inacio. This duo along with Martinez could be among the league’s best defensive groups and on a par with the options that Man City have.
