Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has conducted his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash with Newcastle.

Ten Hag recorded the briefing after the last-gasp 1-0 Europa League group stage win over Omonia Nicosia and was asked for an injury update.

The Dutchman spoke about Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire, both of whom missed the game at Old Trafford through injury.

Martial seems to have a chance to face the Magpies but Maguire is expected to only resume full training with the team next week.

When asked for Sunday’s team news, with Martial and Maguire named specifically, Ten Hag said: “Anthony Martial can be [fit] but we have to wait how it develops in the coming hours.

“Harry Maguire will not make this, but it doesn’t take long, I think.

“No, no, no. I think that next week he will be back in the team training or over next week.”

Martial has been hampered by injury problems since an impressive pre-season and he has not been able to build on that form from the summer.

Maguire had been dropped by Ten Hag before he went off on England duty and picked up an injury in the 3-3 draw with Germany.

He needs to recover quickly in terms of his World Cup hopes because he is running out of games to prove his fitness.

England teammate Luke Shaw has featured more in Ten Hag’s plans lately and was summoned from the bench last night with United chasing a goal.

A more clinical performance is needed from United on Sunday against a side who have played extremely well against Manchester City and Liverpool already this season.
