Ten Hag explains what he said to Fred before kick-off and how Brazilian responded

Fred scored Manchester United’s opener against Tottenham to set the team on course for victory.

This sounds like a surprise outcome based on Fred’s performance against Newcastle at the weekend, but after a strong opening 45 minutes against Spurs, the goal was coming.

Fred was one of Manchester United’s best players in the first half, and he continued with strong second half at Old Trafford.

In addition to his goal, he played a key role in United’s second, scored by Bruno Fernandes.

Ten Hag conversation before kick-off

Manager Erik ten Hag was asked about Fred’s performance in his post-match interviews and relayed a conversation the pair had before kick-off.

Ten Hag explained: “I asked him before the game are you ready?

“He said coach, I am always ready. He proved it. It was a magnificent performance from Fred, that’s clear.”

Fred’s goal was his first of the season, and the second he has scored against Tottenham.

It was his first strike since his goal against Leeds back in February, and while it had the help of a deflection, Fred deserves the credit for being in the right place and directing his effort on target.

Fred played all 90 minutes, creating three goalscoring chances, and having six shots at goal.

Playing alongside Casemiro gave him freedom to get forward and have an impact in the final third, but he also managed to contribute defensively.

Fred blocked three shots, made two interceptions and made seven ball recoveries, working well in tandem with Casemiro, who continues to look a class act.

Erik ten Hag now has a tough decision to make at the weekend, whether to keep Fred in the side or bring back Christian Eriksen.
