Manchester United’s Tahith Chong will never forget his Champions League debut.
The Dutch winger was on the pitch when the final whistle blew on a famous 3-1 victory. And the club’s fans should be impressed by his confidence on the ball, even if he did not always make the right choices.
Chong could easily have frozen on such a big stage. After all, the 19-year-old was sent on with United desperate for a season-defining goal.
Yet his confidence was clear from the outset. He demanded the ball time and again, moving into good positions and using his pace on the few occasions he was able to.
Players far older and more experienced than Chong would have struggled to get into the game so late. However, the United youngster took the bull by the horns.
He waved, gesticulated and called for the ball. So his two wayward passes in the final stages can be forgiven.
Chong will get far easier games to impact in the months ahead. And do not be surprised if he does just that.
He knows he belongs in this company. That was clear to see from the few minutes he was on the field.
Wingers need that kind of confidence and the United prospect has it in abundance. The future is bright for Chong…and it is going to be exciting watching his career unfold.
