Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray praises Manchester United loanee Amad

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray praised Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo following an impressive cameo appearance off the bench.

The 20-year-old joined the Black Cats on loan for the remainder of the 2022-23 campaign at the end of last month.

The Ivory Coast international, who joined Manchester United from Atalanta in deal that could reach £37.2m in add-ons, is yet to start for the Stadium of Light side, but he’s come off the bench in the last three matches.

In yesterday’s 2-2 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road, Sunderland’s number 16 thought he had registered his first goal involvement for Mowbray’s side, but Jack Clarke, who volleyed home Amad’s inch-perfect cross was adjudged to have been in an offside position.

The man who was on loan at last season’s Europa League finalists Rangers for the second of the campaign didn’t agree with linesman’s decision to chalk off Clarke’s goal, judging by his reaction on Instagram.

Mowbray reserved special praise for the four-time Ivory Coast international after his eye-catching cameo against the Hornets, having come off the bench just after the hour mark.

Mowbray said: “I thought Amad today showed some real class and quality, as he should because what he cost Manchester United and he’s here on loan.

“He showed that he can stand up and really deliver.

“I’m pretty sure depending on the situation as we move forward it won’t be long before he starts a football match for us and hopefully he gets on the scoresheet and he’s off and running.”

Amad created one chance against the side that were relegated from the Championship last season.

With Sunderland’s next game not coming for two weeks when Amad could come up against his Manchester United teammate Alvaro Fernandez when the Black Cats host Preston North End, the Ivorian will be looking to impress Mowbray in training and earn his first start in the Championship.
