Strictly star says he ‘rainbow flicked’ current Man Utd ace Luke Shaw in training once

It’s safe to say Strictly Come Dancing fans and Manchester United fans are worlds apart.

The TV show is a British dance contest where celebrities partner with professional dancers to compete mainly in ballroom and Latin dance.

There have been several footballers who have partaken in the show before. Legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel and ex-Red Devil Robbie Savage have both tried their luck tapping their feet.

But there’s one man involved in the show with seemingly no correlation to the club who shares a story with current United ace Luke Shaw.

Kai Widdrington could have been a footballer

Kai Widdrington is an English dancer and choreographer. In 2010, he was the Junior World Latin American champion and two years later he reached the final of the sixth series of Britain’s Got Talent.

He now features regularly on Strictly as one of the main dancers paired with the celebrities.

But this wasn’t always the case. A recent interview with the Daily Mail suggested that the 28-year-old had to choose between dancing and football at an early age.

‘At 12, I had to choose,’ he explains. ‘They offered me a contract and I decided to be a professional dancer.

‘I could have been a footballer. Theo could have pursued dancing, but he (his dad) loved football and I loved dancing a little bit more.

‘I started to get better and loved it. I always say I much prefer a warm dance studio rather than being kicked around the pitch on a freezing cold morning.’

He then goes on to tell a funny anecdote about the current Red Devil – Luke Shaw. The pair were in the same academy setup during Shaw’s time at Southampton.

‘I remember rainbow flicking Luke Shaw once in training,’ he reveals.

‘I’d never done that in my life, I was on trial wearing blades on an astroturf and getting rinsed, so I rainbow flicked.

‘He’s probably not bothered now on quarter of a million pounds a week at Man United!’

Kai remains a Southampton fan to this day – but probably isn’t a fan of Shaw anymore since his move to Old Trafford!
