Ben Foster has called out Jesse Lingard as one of the flops of the season after his poor 2022/23 campaign.

Manchester United released Jesse Lingard a year ago, prompting plenty of discussion about where his next move might be.

Lingard made the decision to sign with Nottingham Forest on a one-year deal.

His time at the City Ground is now over after a disappointing season in which he started only 12 Premier League matches.

Jesse Lingard future unclear

Speaking to his Football Fill In YouTube show, Ben Foster put Jesse Lingard forward in discussion for the ‘flop of the season’.

He said that Lingard’s aim that the one-year deal would put him in the shop window had backfired.

Foster explained: “There was a lot of ‘he’s going to reinvent himself’. It hasn’t happened for him has it.

“The one-year deal played into his hands more than anything. ‘If i rip it up this season i could get a big move to ‘whoever’ a bigger team, top half, established.

“He scored one goal, zero assists, absolute stinker. Interesting to see where he goes from here.”

Lingard left Manchester United last summer after a season of major frustration, having been denied a loan deal in January 2022.

Manchester United should have cashed in on him in 2021 after his loan at West Ham, before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer convinced him to stay.

Lingard’s move to Nottingham Forest was a gamble which did not work out, with no goals and no assists in 17 total Premier League appearances.

Now a free agent once again, he will have another chance to reinvent himself – but it remains to be seen whether it will be in the Premier League.

Last season he was in-demand, with the perception Manchester United had been holding him back. But this current summer there might not be as much clamour for his signature.
