Spanish press rave about David de Gea’s performance v Real Sociedad

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is in unstoppable form right now, backed up by both numbers, and his eye-catching performances.

Last night he recorded his sixth clean sheet in his last seven games, a span in which he has not conceded a goal in open play.

It wasn’t just a straightforward clean sheet. Like in the weekend victory over West Ham, De Gea produced saves which most goalkeepers would not make.

The best was a double save in the first half, which ensured United were able to beat Real Sociedad 1-0, a creditable result even if it wasn’t quite enough to top the group.

De Gea was omitted from Spain’s 55-man preliminary World Cup squad list this week, with five goalkeepers selected by Luis Enrique ahead of him.

It’s hard to believe any of them are in better form than De Gea right now, and La Roja may regret not taking him.

The Spanish press were impressed by his performance against Real Sociedad, although made no comment on his international situation.

Newspaper AS reported: “De Gea was superb with two saving stoppages.”

Mundo Deportivo wrote that the second of the two efforts was “saved almost miraculously by De Gea.”

The report added, “he became a superhero,” in the way he managed to save the second shot with the top of his head.

De Gea will have been hugely satisfied to deliver a strong performance back in his homeland, really proving a point.

He is out of contract at the end of the season and if an agreement is not struck at Manchester United, a return back to Spain is his most likely option.

Last night’s performance won’t have done him any harm at all – although there could be further trips back to Spain to come with Manchester United.

The Red Devils will discover their fate in the Europa League draw next Monday, which features two Spanish sides dropping down from the Champions League, Barcelona and Sevilla.

Even if United avoid them in this upcoming round, there is a chance of being drawn against them as the competition progresses if all teams make it through.
