Souness reveals first question he’d ask ‘unhappy’ Manchester United man over his form

Graeme Souness has explained the first question he would ask Marcus Rashford about his form amid a scathing attack on the Manchester United forward.

Marcus Rashford has been very poor this season by the standards he set last season which has led to former Liverpool man and notorious pundit Graeme Souness criticising him.

This after the opening few months of the campaign has seen Rashford look largely disinterested and more worryingly, toothless and lazy on and off the ball. A player once renowned for his directness and making things happen seems more eager to lay off a simple pass than beat his man these days.

Rashford has been one of United’s most disappointing players this season so far only conjuring up one goal in all competitions. It is a worrying concern which has forced Erik ten Hag into comment, saying he has a “strong belief he will return to scoring a lot of goals.” according to club media.

Souness critiques Rashford

Souness wrote in his Daily Mail column, a damning criticism of Rashford.

“For whatever reason, Marcus Rashford still doesn’t look a happy bunny. It’s hard to know why, given that he’s playing for one of the world’s great football clubs, is approaching his prime years and earns a shedload of money. I know the first question I’d ask if I ever bump into him: ‘Why do you look so unhappy, son?’

“The word you associate with all great players is ‘consistency’. Consistency to perform at the highest level and make a big contribution to your team almost every week.

“But too often during his career, Rashford has not managed that. He went absent for a year, before last season when we thought, ‘Rashford’s back’.

“Right now, he’s not the same player we saw last season. Those who fluctuate from good to average are not great players and I’m afraid we still don’t know to which category Rashford belongs.”

Manchester Derby awaits

Despite his poor form all season thus far, Old Trafford on Sunday offers him an opportunity to erase all of that and kick-start his season. A reason to be positive is that Rashford usually turns up in the biggest games, and hopes are high that he will impress against Manchester City.

If he manages to score against City, his troubles will be forgotten and the fans will be right behind him once more. However, as Souness said, Rashford will need to prove thousands wrong in order to help United walk out of Sunday just three points behind City.
