Manchester United already have one exciting young attacker in their first-team ranks in the form of Mason Greenwood. The 18-year-old burst onto the scene this season, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists in his debut campaign.
For now, it is Greenwood’s job to develop an understanding with Marcus Rashford, Dan James and Anthony Martial. But, further down the line, he could be part of another devastating partnership at Old Trafford.
Ayodeji Sotona’s long-term position at United is unclear. The 17-year-old left-winger-cum-striker is yet to sign a professional deal at Old Trafford. That has led to talk of a future elsewhere, but this is one player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should do everything in his power to keep.
United have a rich history of impressive attacking duos. The manager himself knows a thing or two about that, watching on as Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke scored for fun while playing a huge role alongside Teddy Sheringham.
For now, Rashford, Martial and Greenwood are excelling. But United are a club that always looks forward and Sotona should not be allowed to slip through the net.
Since moving from the wing to a centre-forward role, the 17-year-old has excelled, suggesting he could be the perfect future partner for Greenwood.
The latter’s finishing is unrivalled among United’s next generation, but Sotona is catching up fast – quite literally. His pace is remarkable and he could cause havoc among Premier League defences while creating plenty of space for Greenwood to exploit.
There is a long way to go before Sotona is playing as regularly and effectively as Greenwood. But United and Solskjaer should do everything they can to keep him.
If both reach their full potential, they could go down as another outstanding United attacking duo.
