Sky Sports pundit picks which Man Utd legend Dwight Yorke or Andy Cole was ‘nightmare’ to play against

Manchester United treble winning duo Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke are widely regarded as one of the best strike partnerships of the Premier League era.

It’s rare two players sync-up so spectacularly, especially from the very first moment. What Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke were able to achieve in 1998/99 was special, with the duo quickly becoming Europe’s most fearsome strike partnership.

Yorke scored 29 goals in all competitions while Cole smashed in a further 24. Incredibly they were also supported by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham who netted a further 23 between them too.

Last night Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football ran a segment on the best strike combinations of all time, and naturally, Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke featured heavily.

Dwight Yorke or Andy Cole

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher spoke about the duo and picked out which one was toughest to face.

Carragher said: “I felt, for me Dwight Yorke was the better player than Andy Cole, but, I preferred to play against Dwight Yorke than Andy Cole.

“Andy Cole was a nightmare to play against.”

Carragher said this was because while Yorke was tricky, he always knew the former Aston Villa man preferred to receive the ball into his feet. He said Cole was far more unpredictable and this made him so much harder to deal with.

Fellow pundit Daniel Sturridge also spoke about his memories of seeing the duo. He said: “Watching them as a kid, they were the perfect, when I talk about traditional 4-4-2 partnership, they were probably the best at that.

“The chemistry they had, you could see they enjoyed playing with each other.”

Striker depth Manchester United could dream of

Right now if you said Manchester United would have a striker this season who will score more than 20 goals, fans would take that deal right now, let alone two. Rasmus Hojlund has only three, Marcus Rashford one, and Anthony Martial one.

In 1998/99 Manchester United had four strikers who combined for 76 goals.

Yorke and Cole were the standouts, but it was Sheringham and Solskjaer who provided the final touch in Barcelona to complete the Treble. What a special season.

Until the club gets the current strikeforce settled and firing, which will require further signings, the top trophies will remain out of reach for Manchester United.
