Sky Sports pundit gives his verdict on harsh penalty decision against Rasmus Hojlund

Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on the penalty decision in Manchester City’s favour during the 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United started the game well but the award of the penalty seemingly turned the tide in the Citizens favour.

Rasmus Hojlund seemingly pulled back Rodri in the penalty box and, after a lengthy review of the footage by VAR, the decision was given and Erling Haaland rolled the ball passed Andre Onana.

City, from then on, dominated the first half and most of the second half in a rather comfortable victory at Old Trafford to end United’s winning run.

Carragher’s verdict

Speaking on Sky Sports at half-time, the former Liverpool defender believes that it was certainly a questionable decision to award City the penalty which got them on their way to the three points.

“It was certainly a harsh one,” Carragher said. ” You see that so often during games and I am surprised that they gave it.”

The Red Devils looked rather limp following the award of the penalty and never looked like coming back in the game at all.

The decision angered Manchester United supporters and it did kill any momentum the side had in the first half, and it follows the theme throughout the season of decisions going against the Red Devils.

United’s luck with VAR

It’s fair to say United have had some rather harsh decisions go against them this season. The alleged foul by Hojlund was certainly a harsh one and the question from the United fanbase has been why wasn’t a similar incident awarded for the Red Devils against Arsenal.

Hojlund was wrestled to the ground by Arsenal defender Gabriel but nothing was awarded. Questions need to be asked about VAR certainly.

United will rue their luck, as they should, but the reality is that the Red Devils did nowhere near enough in the game to avoid the rather embarrassing defeat.
