Sky Sports dismiss Michael Edwards to Manchester United claims

Manchester United’s transfer window in the summer saw the club successfully recruit five key first team players.

However despite this positive outcome, the route to get there appeared chaotic, and the club are widely viewed to have paid more than necessary, had the club been more organised early on.

This has led to speculation over a possible restructure. One report this week suggested former Liverpool recruitment guru Michael Edwards could be brought in.

A report from Football Insider had alleged Manchester United were confident of bringing Edwards in after making an approach. This has since been played down.

Sky Sports dismiss Michael Edwards to Manchester United claims

Michael Edwards is widely regarded as one of the key figures behind Liverpool’s return to the top over the past five years, playing a key role in turning them around.

Adding him into the Manchester United rebuild could be a savvy move, but let’s not get carried away.

Two separate reports have played down claims he is close to heading to Old Trafford.

A report from Sky Sports reads: “Sky Sports News has been told suggestions he is close to agreeing a deal with Manchester United are fiction.”

Chelsea have made an approach for Edwards, the report states, but he is not yet believed to be close to making his next move.

CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs reports no move is imminent, even though he understands there is interest from United.

The situation is one to watch, but we have learned throughout Manchester United’s spell under the Glazers that the club are reluctant to hire an external recruitment candidate.

After years of pledging to hire a director of football, United did so by hiring John Murtough as an internal candidate, with no experience of the role.

The club’s chaotic summer left a lot to be desired, and there is still a view among fans that United need to be smarter, more decisive, and professional.

It would be a clever move to bring in Edwards, or an alternative like Paul Mitchell. But it doesn’t sound like this one is happening any time imminently.
