Sir Alex Ferguson signing was ‘petrified’ and ‘nervous’ during Man Utd spell, he ‘didn’t enjoy’ one second

Former Manchester United and Wrexham player Ben Foster has surprisingly admitted that he “hated every second” of his time at Old Trafford.

Ben Foster was brought to Old Trafford in 2005 after he left Stoke City, with Manchester United agreeing a deal worth up to £3m to sign him.

The 40-year-old made 23 first-team appearances during his spell at United, with Foster spending two seasons on loan at Watford during his time at Old Trafford.

During his spell under Sir Alex Ferguson, former England international Foster lifted two League Cups with United before he was sold to Birmingham City in 2010.

Foster struggled to make his mark at United under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and has now candidly opened up about his experience at Old Trafford.

Foster talks Man Utd struggles

Speaking to talkSPORT, Ben Foster said that he was “petrified” of making mistakes and was “nervous” during his spell at Manchester United.

“I look back at that person who played for Manchester United back then, and it’s not me, honestly,” he said.

“I was so wet behind the ears, I didn’t understand how anything worked in life really, I used to just look around.

“You [Andy Goldstein] said to me, ‘It must be incredible, it must have been amazing,’ and it wasn’t.

“I hated every second of it. Honestly, I didn’t enjoy it.

“I was nervous, I was petrified of making a mistake, petrified of what the outside world would say about it. And that’s a bad way to go about it, isn’t it?

“When you go to games thinking and fearing the worst, ‘Don’t make a mistake,’ you’re off to a bad start straight away.

“I’d look around at some of these big names around me, and I’d just think, ‘How have I got here?’”

Foster’s career post-Man Utd

Foster was loaned out to West Brom during his time at Birmingham City and the former United player completed a permanent switch to the Baggies in 2012.

The ex-West Brom star spent six years at the Hawthorns before he made his return to Watford in 2018, with Foster spending four years at Vicarage Road.

Foster left Watford after his contract expired and made the surprise decision to sign for Wrexham in 2022, having previously had a loan spell at the club.

The former Red Devils ‘keeper, who initially retired in 2022, played a key part in Wrexham securing the National League title and promotion to League Two.

Foster had agreed to a new deal with Wrexham in June 2023, but the former West Brom man retired for the second time only two months after inking a new contract.
